Verizon Communications, the communication behemoth, is poised to close on the purchase of Yahoo!. Verizon is also pursuing the purchase of AOL. Yahoo! was one of the early pioneers of the internet in 1990’s.  Founded by Jerry Yang and David Film in Sunnyvale, California. Yahoo! was also one of the earliest search engines, over taking Alta Vista and Archie, who where the search engine leaders of the early internet era. Yahoo!’s initial search technology was in the form of text only. It didn’t have GUI’s. Just text entry, and text search results. No pictures or graphics, just text. In addition to it’s Yahoo! Search, it’s long been a portal to the internet via its Yahoo! Mail  Yahoo! News Yahoo! Finance Yahoo! Groups sports, maps, social media and video’s etc. It’s News site gets about 7 billion hits per month. It was once the most popular website in the US, but declined steadily in the late 2000’s. Why?  Probably because of a lack of leadership in leveraging its enormous traffic into monetizations. It was once valued at 100 billion dollars. It owns 15% of Alibaba which is China’s e-commerce website, doing more business per year the eBay and Amazon combined. Verizon is offering just under $5 billion for Yahoo!  The word “yahoo” is a backronym for “Yet Another Hierarchically Organized Oracle.” Verizon Will Purchase Yahoo 4.8 Billion

Where Did Yahoo Fall Short

Verizon Will Purchase Yahoo 4.8 Billion. It had to-kill-for traffic, but it had its share of problem aside from the all important aspect not making big money profits. It’s had a few changes of CEO’s, and it had 2 major data breaches. The worst breach made the accounts of a billion Yahoo! users vulnerable. That’s really bad for a tech company to have that happen to themselves. CEO Marissa Mayer and Yahoo co-founder David Filo will step down from the company’s board upon the purchase consummation. 

Verizon Will Purchase Yahoo 4.8 Billion. Upon the successful purchase by Verizon, the Yahoo! name will change to Altaba. Changing the name will prove to be a big mistake. Name recognition is so very important to a business. Part of Yahoo’s success was in the quirky simplicity of its name.  We as humans are simple minded about names. Yahoo! might have sounded like a frivolous, corny name, a word uttered by “hicks”,  but it was a simple easy name to remember and to say. The acronym KISS means Keep It Simple Stupid.

A politician who had gotten into trouble said, “I don’t care what they’re saying about me, as long as they are saying something about me.”  If you don’t know the name, you can’t say either good or bad things about it. Verizon Will Purchase Yahoo. Will it go through?  We’ll see.
