APPLE WORLD WIDE DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE JUNE 2, 2014

Monday June 2nd, 2014 was the first of four days of Apple World Wide Developers Conference in San Fran, California. You can view the keynote presentations at http://www.apple.com/apple-events/june-2014/

Princeton University Professor John Mulvey wasn’t there. He was too busy. See what he was doing here via this report. http://www.myfoxny.com/story/26030623/professor-lawn-signs

The end of the naming of Apple Operating Systems on the theme of “big cats” occurred in October, as you’ve probably determined, when Apple transitioned from the OS name of Mountain Lion 10.8, to the OS name of Mavericks 10.9. Mavericks was installed 40 million times to date, making it the fastest adopotion of any pc operating system ever, and is 51% of Apple’s OS “installed base”. That means that 51% of all Apple Operating System users, you and me, run Mavericks compared to the 49% who are running earlier versions, Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard, Leopard, Tiger.  Windows 8, www.Microsoft.Com shipped a year before Mavericks, and is only at 14% of its installed base.  In the last fiscal year the industry declined by 5%, though Mac grew by 12%.  OS10.0 has been named Yosemite and the succeeding OS theme names will be based upon beautiful California locations. The town of Weeds, California had a significantly large pocket of popularity among the Apple employess, but Yosemite was chosen instead.  In Yosemite, Apple has introduced a new thing called Continuity. When OSX succeeded OS9, Apple began its bold “Aqua” theme which they “continue” as in “continuity” and maintained in Mavericks and “continue” in Yosemite. A major theme of OS X Yosemite is this Continuity, ensuring that users can move seamlessly between devices. With Yosemite and iOS 8, users will be able to use a new Handoff feature to switch devices and pick up right where they left off. Users will be able to make and receive phone calls right from their Macs with iPhone integration, while Mac users out of range of Wi-Fi networks will be able to initiate Instant Hotspots on their iPhones with a single click on the Mac.

Unknown Mavericks Desktop Wallpaper.

Translucency is also introduced, such as the translucency in Yosemite’s windows and dock, which are kinda meant to take on a 3D look. It is also consistent with typography and sidebars, and they will take on the personality of your desktop wallpaper. Personally, I’m of the opinion that the GUI designers  (pronounced goo-e / graphical user interface) at Apple are obsesed with making every icon circular. My eyeballs need some varied geometry in the graphics that it looks at. 😀

The Developer Conference began 25 years ago in 1990 with 1300 registered software developers. Today there are 9 million. They are simply people who write software programs, their own, for Apple Operating Systems.

Apple is now taking Drop Box head-on with iCloud Drive which is really no different than Apple’s iCloud, which was the 1st cloud. They’ve simply added the word Drive to iCloud to make us associate it with and grab onto the coattails of Google’s Drive.  There’s also Handoff. AirDrop now works between the Mac and the iOS. HandOff.  The device around you are aware of what you’re doing, so if you want to pickup on your Mac where you left off on your iPad by swiping up from the lower left of your iPad. And it works in the other direction as well. The Mac will prompt you right on the Dock.

Safari has a streamlined toolbar and a new Favorites view for bookmarks and frequently visited sites.  Safari in Yosemite includes an improved Nitro JavaScript engine, making it faster than ever. It’s also more energy efficient, providing functions like two extra hours of battery life when watching Netflix. A new Tabs View makes it faster and easier to view opened browsed multi-tab, and Spotlight is more powerful in the Safari URL/Search Bar. iMessage can now function with SMS and syncs with iCloud across all you iCloud enabled device and allows you to send audio and video clips. If your sending email via iCloud, you can send attachments sizes up to 5 Giga Bytes. That’s 5 Giga Bytes. 20 MegBytes is the standard among other email providers.  A new Markup Feature allows you to make notations into image fields and into documents with the Mail Client as your addressing the email itself. Check it out. Look for the next blog this week.
